Laptop Surgery

May 5th, 2009

As some of you know the right fan on my laptop was making one hell of a racket when it revved up to anything over say stationary. So I ordered a fan from http://www.powerbookmedic.com/ two weeks ago and arrived today (which oddly enough is exactly the day that it was pissing me off the most).

So heres the wonderful picture of the innards of my MacBook Pro after I had replaced the fan, you can just about see that I tore off some of the black tape that helps to hold the fan in place. The main thing that holds the fan in place is 3 T6 screws which is always awkward but I bought the screwdriver set a while back so it wasn’t a problem (there are also a pair of T6 screws that you need to remove just to take off the top cover). So post op the laptop is now closed up, and the rest is silence.

Note: at the time of writing the fan is quiet, but that might also be because the fan barely needs to spin at all while I’m typing this post. Lets see how it does when I’m at work tomorrow.

Resaurant: Rasa Sayang

May 5th, 2009
Rasa Sayang

Rasa Sayang

Diana, Chris, Steve and me went to Rasa Sayang for dinner to catch up a little a month into our industrial placement, so that was good fun but I think I’ll focus on the food for now. Rasa Sayang is on Macclesfield Street which is just off of Gerrard street which is the main street where all the other resaurants in chinatown are pretty much on, so it’s a pretty easy place to find. Chris ordered Hokkien Mee which the photo turned out fairly terrible due to low lighting, and Mr. blurry cam, I upped the lighting and contrast a little on the picture but I haven’t really bothered to do that much to it. Also award for messiest eater tonight.

Beef Rendang was Steves order along with a Tiger beer.

And my order would be pretty obvious for those people that know the food I eat. Also coincidently one of the most insane things ever to make yourself. If you want to make it yourself, http://rasamalaysia.com/recipe-penang-hokkien-mee-prawn-noodle/ , go take a look, it’s a little crazy. But since this is my order I’m somewhat more entitled to give an opinion on how good it is. It was pretty good actually, surprisingly so with a lovely prawny taste to it (which I would hope so for something with a damn prawn soup base). If I could complain about it it would be that it wasn’t spicy enough as you can see by the almost complete absence of chilli in the picture. I ordered a Teh Tarik to go along with it, which was actually pretty underwhelming, it didn’t have nearly as much flavour to it as it should have, but thats just my opinion so if you do go and order it let me know what you think.

Overall I can give this place a thumbs up if you feel like having some Malay food. All our orders combined came to about £32 although you should note that service charge is not included in that and is left to your discretion how much you want to leave.

Sins of a Solar Empire Video Capture Failure

April 30th, 2009

Okay I said that I would put up another post today, I was hoping for something slightly more interesting than an ‘I failed’ post but whatever. I was hopefully going to have a video of Sins Of A Solar Empire Entrenchment up tonight but unfortunately the menus were flickering like crazy on the captured video. The rest of the game was fine but the flickering basically made the video unwatchable, but I figured that I would post how my free fraps alternative works instead.

http://protectedsoft.com/download.php

The first link is to VH Screen Capture Driver which basically turns your desktop into a vitrual capture device, which then using some sort of video program (not really) which can read from that driver. The second link is to ProtectedSoft downloads page, the one that you want is Video DVD Maker Free. I actually hate that program but when I was playing about a while ago it was one of the only programs that I tested that worked. VLC had huge problems reading both the video and the audio, usually to the point that you may get no video at all and the audio would almost always stutter. VirtualDub read the video fine and I actually like that program, but the stuttering audio was still a problem and I couldn’t really be that bothered to cut the audio in together with the video.

The reason that I used Video DVD Maker is that it allows you to record to uncompressed avi which is something that a lot of things don’t seem to do for some reason, if you’re not that bothered by wasted CPU cycles on compression you have much better options available to you. For me at least it seems to capture both the video and audio fine. If you find something that works better let me know and I’ll test it out, but for now this is Andrew signing off.

Introversion Lunch

April 30th, 2009

Buying food for lunch in central London is kind of expensive so instead I’ve resorted to making lunch instead of buying. I should have posted a couple of my other lunches but I’ve been rather lazy, but it does mean that I have this lovely picture to share on my first food post.

Lunch!

Lunch!

Hopefully this will be the first of many such lunch posts and if I’m not too lazy I’ll put up a post later tonight but for now that is all.

First Post!

April 23rd, 2009

Okay I know this has taken a long time even for me to get to this fairly rubbish state, oddly enough doing work takes time. So does procrastination but whatever. I’m going to change the colour of the title bar so that it’s slightly less black than it is right now. And the video and gallery sections are what will probably need the most work, if I can even figure out what I need to do to them. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep this blog alive but I kind of have a lot of stuff to do right now.
